Firstly, thank you for taking an interest in Search Convert, I really do appreciate it. Feel free to tell me you’ve stopped by or just say hello, I’m @searchconvert.
My name is Martin, (good looking dude on the right!) founder of Search Convert and my interest in SEO goes all the way back to my College days (some 14 years ago, sigh). Like most students, I used Google to do research for various projects and assignments and quickly began wondering how on earth these search engines were choosing which sites to show me.
I did some reading about SEO and learnt more about Google but to be honest, back then it just seemed like SEO was all secrets and tricks. There was so much uncertainty around what Google actually look for when ranking websites, people were developing formulas and tricks and secrets that ‘guaranteed’ results. The whole thing just appeared extremely unprofessional to me (and a lot of other people!).
So I parked the idea of SEO and went off to Uni to study Business and Law.
Again though, whilst doing research for various essays, my interest was spiked. How was Google deciding which sites to show me when searching for
nearby pizza delivery companies important essay stuff? It fascinated me! And so did the opportunity it presented. Little did I know it at the time but it turns out that the opportunity was (and still is) spectacularly big.
After university I got various temping jobs but quickly built up my knowledge of SEO by following numerous blogs, reading forums and, eventually, building my own sites to see this SEO thing in action first hand. At one point I must have owned 20+ websites, but the lessons learned from testing out ideas on them was invaluable. I still think this is extremely important today and have kept a small number of websites I can monitor and test on.
Whilst temping, I landed a job with a finance company in Manchester designing and implementing SEO strategies across a number of sites in extremely competitive industries.
I then moved to Bristol and co-founded Red Effect, a digital marketing agency specialising in SEO and PPC. After 5 successful years, I left Red Effect to start Search Convert which focuses exclusively on SEO campaigns for SMEs.
